OpenClaw Node Pairing Fix Keeps Devices Flowing

PR #169575 fixes a subtle but high-impact node reliability problem in OpenClaw: one device's pairing write could interrupt active node requests or Gateway-to-node events for another device.

The merged PR describes failures such as node pairing changed before request dispatch and node pairing state unavailable before dispatch. Those errors could appear during routine pairing writes, including token verification, reconnect bookkeeping, presence updates, metadata changes, approvals, and revocations.

The User-Facing Symptom

The practical version is simple: connected nodes could stop receiving requests or silently drop events while a separate device was updating pairing state.

That is a nasty failure mode because the affected node is not necessarily the one being changed. A routine presence or reconnect write for device B could make device A's request path temporarily treat pairing authority as unknown. For anyone depending on OpenClaw nodes for distributed work, that is exactly the sort of edge case that feels random from the outside.

The fix keeps node requests and events flowing while other devices connect, reconnect, verify tokens, or update pairing metadata. At the same time, the PR preserves the important security behavior: revoking or re-approving a node still retires that node's live connection as before.

Why the Fence Came Down

The old implementation placed the in-memory pairing publication into an authority-unknown state for most pairing writes while the worker round trip completed. The PR argues that the fence was broader than necessary because stored rows remain authoritative until the database commit, and the first binding read after commit installs the worker's receipt.

So the change removes the broad invalidatesAuthority distinction. Failed-read blocking, unknown-settlement blocking, epoch checks, incomplete-row checks, receipt installation, and live transport retirement on revocation remain intact.

That is the key engineering line: the patch reduces false uncertainty without weakening the paths that actually protect authority changes.

The Tradeoff Is Explicit

The PR is unusually clear about the race it accepts. A Gateway-to-node send that lands in the tiny interval between commit and receipt post can use the pre-commit binding. The author frames that as linearizing before the write, because the caller has not yet been told the write succeeded, and revocation still retires the transport immediately after.

If the worker dies after commit but before posting its receipt, old bindings remain visible until the operation settles as unknown, at which point publication blocks until a fresh read. That is a crash-recovery shape rather than a silent permanent mismatch.

Proof Coverage

The evidence is broad for a PR of this size. A Gateway transport proof uses real node WebSocket clients and holds a presence write for one node while another node receives and completes node.invoke work. The same harness covers rejection behavior for token revoke, token rotate, unpair, and reapproval.

The infra regression suite also holds writes for token verification, connection records, presence, metadata, and token revocation, then checks that unrelated device authority remains readable. On the old code, those cases failed because the unrelated device could not get a current publication.

This is a strong operational fix: it keeps OpenClaw's distributed node system usable during ordinary churn, while leaving revocation and reapproval boundaries in place.
