OpenClaw merged a P1 OpenShell reliability fix tonight that targets one of the more unsettling classes of remote-workspace bugs: a file operation reporting success while a concurrent workspace publication later removes the written file.

The change landed in PR #130447, titled fix(openshell): preserve file writes during concurrent mirror commands. The pull request describes a reproduced case where an OpenShell mirror sandbox could accept a file write, return success to the user, and still lose that file after another command published its downloaded workspace.

What Changed

The core repair is ownership. OpenClaw now holds the existing workspace lease across the complete mirror file operation, including validation, host-side read or mutation, and remote synchronization. Before this change, the lock lived too late in the path, around the transport step, so another command could still publish over a recently completed host write.

That distinction matters because OpenShell mirror mode is meant to keep local and remote workspace state coherent while agents and commands work through a shared boundary. A transport-only lock protects the network handoff, but not the whole operation that users experience as one file write.

The PR says seven file-bridge operations now share the exec lifecycle owner. Four transport-only wrappers were removed, and private callbacks are used to avoid nested locks. Remote-canonical mode keeps its existing remote-shell bridge, so the fix focuses on the mirror path without changing the broader public contract.

Why It Matters

This is a practical data-integrity improvement for anyone using OpenClaw with Docker-hosted OpenShell gateways or mirrored remote environments. When an agent writes a patch, generated file, config update, or test artifact, the operator needs the result to survive nearby command activity.

The scary part of this bug was not just data loss. It was false confidence. A successful write response normally tells both the user and the agent that the file is present and safe to build on. If that file disappears during a concurrent publish, later steps can fail in confusing ways or proceed against stale state.

The fix makes the write path behave more like one indivisible operation from the workspace owner’s point of view. That should reduce subtle failures in workflows that combine file edits, remote command execution, and workspace synchronization.

Evidence From The Merge

The merged commit, dcb20658, summarizes the change as leasing complete mirror file operations through the workspace owner instead of locking only remote transport.

The PR also cites a real Docker red/green reproduction, a 128-workflow mirror and remote stress matrix, exact inventories, failure recovery coverage, 170 focused tests, and updated operator documentation. That is the right kind of proof for a concurrency fix because the old failure depended on timing, not just static input.

For OpenClaw users, the immediate takeaway is simple: OpenShell mirror writes should now be much harder to clobber during concurrent command publication, while the existing SDK, config, protocol, dependency, and persistence contracts remain unchanged.
