OpenClaw merged a high-priority Gateway reliability fix early on August 29th that should make channel recovery less disruptive during busy agent work. PR #131966, merged at 03:20 UTC, changes how the Gateway responds when a long event-loop pause looks like a host sleep, VM pause, or unmanaged process stop.
Before this patch, a long stall could be treated like a sleep/wake cycle and trigger immediate channel restarts, even while a reply or agent startup was still active. That is exactly the kind of edge case that hurts real users: the system is trying to heal a stale connection, but the healing step can interrupt work that is still in progress.
Recovery Now Waits For Idle Work
The new behavior keeps the existing sleep recovery contract, but adds a more careful gate before restarting channel connections. When OpenClaw detects a timer gap, it closes new Gateway work admission and inspects the current active-work inventory. If tracked work is still running, the channel reconnect is deferred to a later maintenance tick instead of firing immediately.
The PR describes this as preserving active replies and agent startup while still recovering stale channel sockets once the Gateway is quiet. Event-loop reset, health refresh, and presence refresh remain single-shot for the timing-gap episode. Channel reconnects are the part that waits.
That distinction matters because OpenClaw channels are not just passive sockets. They may be carrying a reply, startup handoff, room-specific state, or transport-specific ownership. Restarting too early can turn an internal maintenance event into a visible workflow interruption.
Better Targeted Retry Logic
The patch also tightens account-level recovery. If a stop or startup handoff fails for one account, OpenClaw keeps only the affected account target for retry instead of re-churning successful sibling accounts. A fresh thaw merges a new running-account snapshot with older failures, so retry state does not go stale.
The ChannelManager now reports typed startup handoff outcomes. Transient pre-handoff ownership conflicts can remain retryable, while disabled, unconfigured, manually stopped, suppressed, unsupported, or removed accounts settle as intentional skips.
For operators, that means fewer confusing restart loops around accounts that were deliberately disabled or removed during recovery.
Why It Matters
This is not a new feature users will click in the Control UI. It is a lifecycle fix for the moments when the host gets weird: a VM pause, a SIGSTOP, a busy event loop, or a laptop wake that leaves channels stale.
The new path gives OpenClaw clearer rules:
- Active turns and startup work should finish before channel reconnects run.
- Real host pauses should still reconnect stale channel sockets.
- Admission stays fenced until recovery completes.
- Disabled or removed accounts should not be restarted by old recovery state.
- Transient account failures can retry without restarting healthy siblings again.
The PR includes focused Gateway maintenance tests, channel lifecycle tests, suspend-coordinator tests, and exact-head isolated Gateway traces. One live proof paused a built Gateway for more than 80 seconds, confirmed recovery was deferred while a turn was active, then observed the channel restart only after the turn completed and chat history persisted.
For teams running OpenClaw through chat channels, this is the kind of fix that turns a rare but painful stall into a quieter recovery path. The Gateway still heals itself, but it now gives active work room to finish first.
