OpenClaw Tightens Provider Binary Downloads

OpenClaw merged PR #120351, "refactor(providers): shared generated-media download guard and binary-response adoption", a provider-runtime cleanup with one concrete reliability fix: malformed binary responses now release their unread response body instead of leaving the socket open.

The PR touches generated video, music, speech, and streaming provider paths across OpenAI, Anthropic, MiniMax, BytePlus, Runway, Together, Azure Speech, xAI, Amazon Bedrock, GitHub Copilot, Ollama, and several other extensions.

The headline is not just code reduction. It is contract preservation while centralizing security-sensitive download behavior.

The Problem

Generated-media providers were repeating the same low-level work: bounded binary download checks, timeout and deadline handling, filename derivation, guarded acquisition, and payload-patch stream wrapping.

That duplication is risky because every provider has slightly different edge cases. Some need specific overflow messages. Some have different MIME fallbacks. Some rely on existing SSRF and dispatcher policy. Some provider flows, like Vydra or Google in the PR notes, were intentionally left out because their behavior was not identical enough to flatten safely.

The direct bug was in the shared binary reader. If it rejected a successful HTTP response because the content type was text or JSON, it could throw before consuming or cancelling the body. That left the underlying connection open.

The Repair

OpenClaw now cancels unread bodies when readProviderBinaryResponse rejects text or JSON content. It does that without awaiting cancellation on capture-backed tee streams, avoiding a deadlock risk while still freeing the transport.

The PR also adds a generated-video download seam to the local-only media-generation-runtime Plugin SDK surface and migrates behavior-identical TTS, video, music, and payload-patch paths onto shared helpers.

The migration was deliberately conservative. The PR says exact provider error strings, media filenames, MIME fallbacks, size caps, timeout behavior, retry attribution, and guarded transport cleanup are preserved.

User Impact

For valid generated media, behavior should stay the same. The important improvement is what happens when a provider returns malformed content or the wrong content type.

Instead of throwing while leaving the response body hanging, OpenClaw releases the unread socket. That helps long-running gateways avoid accumulating bad provider connections during failure-heavy periods.

It also gives maintainers one stronger place to reason about generated-media download policy. A shared guard makes future provider work easier to review, especially when the code is enforcing size caps, timeouts, SSRF boundaries, and transport cleanup.

Validation

The PR reports hundreds of focused assertions across provider HTTP errors, generated video assets, generated music assets, TTS providers, video download providers, and payload-patch wrappers. It also passed lint, Plugin SDK surface checks, API generation, a local changed-file gate fallback, and final autoreview.

For operators using generated video, speech, or music providers, PR #120351 is a quiet hardening pass. It reduces duplicated provider plumbing while fixing a real malformed-response socket leak.
