OpenClaw has merged a major reliability fix for cloud CUA and Desktop sessions. PR #136297, merged on September 3 before the nightly cutoff, focuses on preserving Desktop readiness, explicit source choices, popout ownership, and worker outcomes across session placement changes.
This is a P1 change with compatibility and availability risk labels, which is usually a sign that the fix touches behavior users can feel when sessions move, reconnect, or recover.
The Failure Mode
The PR describes several related problems around cloud CUA sessions. Creating or reconnecting a session could leave Desktop availability stale after approval. A manually selected Desktop source could be replaced when placement changed. A dispatched worker could also be lost to its discovery deadline.
Those problems are subtle because they sit between UI state, Gateway placement, cloud worker lifecycle, and browser/VNC transport. A user might see a Desktop panel that looks unavailable even after approval, lose the source they explicitly chose, or get confusing diagnostics after a model call abort.
The same PR also addresses an explicit Continue on Gateway path that could fail after fencing an offline paired device. That matters for operators trying to recover work from a placement that is no longer reachable.
What Changed
The fix consolidates Desktop inventory and session updates around one controller. The Desktop panel now distinguishes automatic selection from explicit user choice, while chat presentation owns the popout lifetime.
Automatic selection can still follow the session, but explicit selection keeps its connection, control state, and popout target through placement updates and delayed lookups. Direct document navigation and real context changes can still replace the source, so the repair does not freeze the UI in the wrong place.
The launch owner now retires the discovery deadline after dispatch while keeping cancellation and ownership checks. That prevents a worker that was already sent out from being treated as missing simply because a deadline owner was still active.
OpenClaw also records authoritative aborted outcomes before a later transport error. That makes diagnostics more useful: an aborted model call should not look like an ordinary successful operation or a generic network problem.
noVNC And Desktop Viewing
The PR includes an approved noVNC 1.7.0 repair. The release notes say ignored extended clipboard payloads are consumed so the next framebuffer message can be parsed correctly.
In practice, that is the kind of bug that can make a remote viewer appear broken for reasons that have nothing to do with the agent's actual task. By keeping the VNC stream aligned, OpenClaw improves passive observation and active browser-control sessions.
Desktop-only English strings now load lazily through the existing viewer catalog path. That trims startup work without changing the visible recovery guidance, shared navigation labels, or viewer behavior.
Why It Matters
Cloud CUA and remote Desktop workflows are only useful when users can trust the session surface. If a worker is running but the UI loses its readiness signal, the user cannot tell whether to wait, intervene, or retry. If a selected Desktop source changes underneath them, control can feel unstable even when the backend is functioning.
PR #136297 makes the Desktop experience more coherent by keeping ownership decisions explicit and by moving cleanup and recovery responsibilities to their canonical owners.
Verification
The PR reports exact-head packaged Linux CUA and WebVNC acceptance proof: five select-all/type cycles, 13 successful computer results, 20 uninterrupted passive viewer observations, workspace reconciliation, and provider cleanup. It also reports a full build, tarball verification, runtime installation checks, 57 Desktop unit tests, 39 real-browser tests, and a passing runtime change gate.
For OpenClaw users relying on cloud browsers, remote desktops, or CUA-style workflows, this is one of the most important reliability merges in the September 3 nightly window.
