OpenClaw agents picked up a cleaner session-management workflow this morning. PR #136952, merged on September 3, fixes cases where agents organizing sessions could see an empty inventory or fail to archive a valid target when Gateway roles were configured.
The practical headline is that agents no longer need to fall back to shell-based session management for ordinary organization work. The built-in session tools can now list and mutate allowed sessions through the Gateway bridge with explicit system authority while preserving operator restrictions.
What Changed
The existing sessions tool now accepts either one target or a batch of 1 to 100 targets for the patch action. Single and batch forms share the same parsing, visibility checks, model override handling, and session identity guards.
That unlocks workflows that previously required repetitive calls or brittle external workarounds:
- Move multiple sessions into a group
- Pin or unpin more than one session in one action
- Apply settings updates across allowed sessions
- Archive or restore with the current session ID
- Report partial success with bounded diagnostics
The PR also tightens cleanup ownership. Accepted self-archive, cancellation, and child cleanup retain the Gateway and effective actor after the initiating turn ends. An attribution profile does not replace that actor, which is important for long-running cleanup that outlives the original request.
Group Consistency
Group rename and delete now share one owner flow. The implementation prepares the rename destination, keeps the source catalog and sidebar visible while guarded member writes run, and retires the source only when the catalog row is still unchanged and old members are gone.
That sounds internal, but it solves a visible problem: interrupted group operations can now preserve discoverable partial progress and provide retry guidance instead of leaving users with an unclear mix of old and new organization state. Retrying is designed to complete remaining work without rolling back successful sibling updates.
Reset admission also remains caller-bound until destructive cleanup starts. After that point, the reset owner finishes only the captured existing lifecycle, preserving concurrent replacements.
User Impact
For people using OpenClaw across many sessions, the change should make organization feel more native and less fragile. Agents can work inside their allowed inventory, apply one change to several sessions, and keep authority attached to the right actor even when cleanup is deferred.
It also changes the presentation of a tool label: the background shell management tool is now labeled "Background Shell" rather than "Gateway Process," which should make the distinction clearer when users inspect available tools.
Verification
The PR includes live dashboard evidence and actual-router SQLite regressions. The reported proof restored an archived fixture, moved two sessions into a Verified group, unpinned both with one patch, and verified both active using sessions_list and sessions tool calls only.
Exact-head CI passed selected Node, Gateway/agent, Windows, macOS Swift, Android, and iOS lanes. Workflow Sanity also passed. The PR records a production delta of 626 added and 322 removed lines, with broader test coverage for batch changes, stale IDs, visibility restrictions, caller closure at commit time, deferred cleanup, and group consistency.
This is a strong Tier 1 OpenClaw systems story: a user-facing workflow got faster, more explicit, and less dependent on shell escape hatches.
