OpenClaw merged PR #96883, "Scope agent cron operations to the calling agent", a P1 security-boundary change for agent-managed scheduled jobs.
Cron is one of the most powerful automation surfaces in OpenClaw. It lets an agent schedule future work, inspect runs, trigger jobs, and remove automation that is no longer needed. That flexibility also means cron needs a crisp ownership boundary when the caller is an agent rather than a human operator.
This PR adds that boundary. Agent-originated cron tool calls now carry the calling agent identity through the Gateway cron API, and server-side validation limits those reads and mutations to jobs owned by the same agent.
What Changed
The Gateway cron API still supports unscoped operator and internal flows. The new behavior applies specifically to agent-tool calls.
For that path, OpenClaw now scopes the full cron lifecycle:
- Listing jobs is limited to the calling agent's jobs.
- Creating a job stamps it with the calling agent.
- Updating, running, showing history for, or removing a job must target a job visible to that agent.
- Cross-agent job targets and session references are rejected.
- Operator-facing unscoped cron behavior remains global.
The PR body includes production-path proof that same-agent cron operations passed while cross-agent attempts were hidden or rejected. It also verified that unscoped operator list and update behavior remained global.
Why It Matters
Multi-agent OpenClaw setups often divide responsibilities across specialized agents: an operations agent, a research agent, a support agent, a publishing agent, and so on.
Without a strict agent-scope check, a cron tool surface can become a place where one agent sees or alters another agent's scheduled work. That is not just confusing; it is a security and reliability boundary. Scheduled jobs often contain target sessions, channel destinations, command payloads, and operational intent.
PR #96883 keeps the operator model intact while making agent-tool cron calls behave like agent-owned automation, not a shared global scratchpad.
Safer Upgrade Behavior
The patch also addresses mixed-version Gateway behavior. If an older running Gateway rejects the new internal agent cron metadata, the agent-facing error fails closed and tells the user to restart the Gateway with openclaw gateway restart.
That detail matters during upgrades. A security-boundary change is only useful if stale components do not silently downgrade behavior. The new message turns a confusing compatibility failure into an explicit restart path.
Installer and Control UI update paths were also updated to surface manual restart or update commands when automatic handoff cannot complete.
Validation
The PR includes extensive focused validation across Gateway cron validators, Gateway server cron tests, agent cron tool tests, flat-parameter cron tool tests, packaged Docker cron CLI smoke coverage, live source-Gateway cron paths, ACPX bridge upgrade-survivor coverage, and packaged Gateway cron lifecycle soak testing.
The proof transcript showed same-agent list, create, update, run, and remove operations passing, while cross-agent list, create, update, run, and remove paths were rejected or hidden. It also confirmed that unscoped operator cron operations remained global.
For OpenClaw operators, this is the kind of change that makes background automation safer as agent fleets grow. Cron remains powerful, but agent-originated cron work now has an explicit owner boundary at the Gateway layer.
