OpenClaw merged PR #145790, a P1 Gateway compatibility repair for managed services that still point at an unsupported Node executable.

The fix is aimed at the service layer rather than the everyday chat surface, but the impact is practical: if a managed Gateway service was recorded with an out-of-range Node binary, OpenClaw now has a clearer repair path instead of carrying that stale runtime forward.

The Compatibility Problem

The PR summary says the patch probes the Node executable recorded in an existing managed Gateway service. If that executable is outside the supported 7.33 runtime ranges, OpenClaw replaces it with a supported runtime. If no supported replacement is available, the command fails before mutating the service and gives actionable guidance.

That ordering matters. A service repair path that changes state before knowing whether it has a valid runtime can leave operators with a worse problem than the one they started with. This change keeps the unsupported-runtime check up front.

What Counts As Node

The PR also reuses OpenClaw's shared Node-runtime classifier. That means eligible executable names include common alternatives such as nodejs, node24, and versioned Node binary names, rather than only a single literal node command.

The prior finding around alternate executables is marked resolved in the PR. Focused tests exercise both nodejs and node24, and the forced-repair path forwards the supported replacement while preserving the existing service environment.

What Users Should Expect

For operators, this is mostly a safer repair story:

  • Existing managed Gateway services are probed for their recorded Node executable.
  • Unsupported service runtimes can be replaced when OpenClaw can find a supported alternative.
  • If OpenClaw cannot find one, it stops before service mutation.
  • Existing service environment settings are retained during forced repair.

There is no broad updater restructuring in this patch. The PR explicitly calls it a narrow 7.33 adaptation of a service-Node repair from earlier work, while excluding later updater restructuring.

Validation

The validation notes are concise but useful. The PR reports 65 passing tests across runtime-binary, runtime-path, and daemon-install suites. It also lists an automatic unsupported-service repair regression, a forced repair regression with retained service settings, core and extension test typecheck, formatting, and diff checks.

The strongest operational proof is a combined package update path from published openclaw@2026.6.35 to a packed 2026.7.33 build. In that proof, the manual restart passed, the managed automatic restart returned in 88 seconds, and state, config, session survival, plugin cleanup, version parity, Gateway health, readiness, and status passed.

Why This Is Worth Covering

Gateway service repair is unglamorous infrastructure work, but it is the work that decides whether upgrades feel routine or fragile. PR #145790 reduces one compatibility trap: a service pinned to a Node binary OpenClaw no longer supports.
