OpenClaw merged a P1 upgrade fix in PR #145335, targeting a painful edge case: managed Gateway upgrades after Node prefix changes.
The issue appears when the invoking CLI and the managed Gateway are no longer using the same global installation after a Node upgrade. In that situation, update preparation has to be careful. It must preserve the currently verified service, prepare the candidate runtime, and recover the exact original runtime if an owned activation fails.
The Upgrade Failure Mode
OpenClaw's managed Gateway is local infrastructure. It may be running under a service definition, a pinned runtime, and an installation root that no longer matches the shell a user is invoking from.
That gets tricky after Node changes. A package manager, user-local Node install, or global prefix migration can leave the CLI seeing one runtime while the service still depends on another. The PR says preparation must keep the invoking installation as the update target, then select a compatible installed Node or provision a checksum-verified private runtime.
The key constraint is ownership. OpenClaw should rebind only the owned Gateway after candidate preparation and validation. Foreign services, non-rewritable definitions, --no-restart, and uncertain child cleanup remain guarded refusal cases.
What Changed
The merged fix carries requester and executor authority through installer, native-service, and Doctor child work. It also preserves both original and candidate root ownership, current-main definition backups, readiness checks, and source-update contracts.
If candidate activation fails under OpenClaw's ownership, the repair can restore the original runtime pin and compensate the retained service even when the service was not stopped before the attempt. That is a narrow but important reliability promise: failed owned updates should not strand the user's working Gateway.
Optional full-package scans can still emit explicit unverified-contents warnings. Mandatory runtime identity and strict package-swap bounds remain enforced.
What It Does Not Claim
The PR is careful about scope. Its isolated native component acceptance proves the bounded restoration algorithm for the tested component, but it does not claim the whole published-driver first-hop installer journey, wider native-platform qualification, in-flight inference handoff, or a live Odin deployment.
That restraint is healthy. This is a targeted P1 reliability fix, not a blanket statement that every updater path has been requalified.
Why Operators Should Care
Node prefix churn is exactly the kind of local-machine problem that can make a self-hosted agent stack feel fragile. The software may be fine, but the service, shell, package manager, and runtime disagree about what "current" means.
This OpenClaw fix reduces that class of failure for managed Gateways. It preserves the verified service during preparation, keeps ownership checks explicit, and gives the updater a better path back to the previous working runtime when a candidate cannot safely take over.
For anyone running OpenClaw as long-lived local infrastructure, that is the sort of unglamorous repair that pays rent every time an upgrade happens.
